The SW Graduate School of Banking at SMU Cox (SWGSB) proudly honored H. Gary Blankenship, Chairman, CEO and Chief Lending Officer of Bank of the West, with its prestigious Distinguished Service Award on May 29.
A true pillar of the banking industry, Mr. Blankenship began his career as a National Bank Examiner with the OCC in Colorado. Since founding Bank of the West in 1986, he has spearheaded its growth to nine thriving locations across Texas. His leadership journey includes serving as President and CEO of two other local banks and holding influential positions in key Texas banking organizations.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Blankenship has made a lasting impact on both the industry and his community. He has contributed his expertise to the Texas Department of Banking Commissioner’s Council, the IBAT Insurance Bond Trust and the Board of National Bancshares of Texas, Inc. His community service includes board positions with the Irving Chamber of Commerce, Irving Symphony and Dallas Summer Musicals.
He shares this incredible journey with his wife, Cynthia Blankenship—a fellow banker and cofounder of Bank of the West. Together, they’ve built not only a successful institution, but a legacy, with their three daughters actively involved in the bank and mortgage company. They are also proud grandparents to three granddaughters and one grandson.
