Next week, the 88th Texas Legislature will be “in the books.” Monday, May 29, is “sine die,” a rather fancy Latin term for the end of a session loosely translated as “without another day.” IBAT’s Government Relations team will be relieved and grateful.

We are in the final week of the session and attempting to ensure that “dead bad bills” aren’t quietly added to moving vehicles over the next several days. Customarily, there is a flurry of activity in both chambers as House deadlines loom. The final days of the session are often marked by much activity behind the scenes as conference committees hash out differences, and this session will be no different.

At this juncture, IBAT is pleased to report that those bills upon which it engaged either positively or negatively are where they need to be in the process. There is still time for mischief, and nothing is final until after the veto period is concluded on June 18, but we are optimistic.

On July 12, IBAT will provide a Legislative Recap as a special edition of our monthly “Ask IBAT Anything” webinar. All Ask IBAT calls are open for registration, including that event. We hope you will join us to discuss our efforts in “the good, the bad and the ugly” of the 88th Texas Legislature and how changes enacted could impact you and your bank. A white paper with a thorough analysis of bills passed impacting your business will be produced over the next several months. As always, we very much appreciate your engagement in this important process, your relationships with your elected officials and the ongoing “great stuff” you do in your communities. It is always an honor and privilege to represent community banking.
