In case you missed it...
On Friday, IBAT Chairman Cliff McCauley and President Chris Williston participated in a press briefing at the Capitol in an attempt to alleviate growing uneasiness of Texas consumers relative to the safety of their insured deposits and general health of Texas community financial institutions.  The press conference was very well attended by major networks and print media throughout the State.
We are pleased to share with you the entirety of the news conference.  In addition, we have uploaded on our web site the collateral materials that were distributed to the press in PDF format.  May we suggest you share this information with your banking personnel to better equip them with customer inquiries?  The video and other materials are available HERE.

Please join us August 14, 2008, as we honor Texas Banking Commissioner Randall James for his years of public service to our industry and our state.  IBAT, along with the Texas Bankers Association, will host a Farewell Appreciation Reception for Commissioner James from 6:00-8:00pm at the Headliners Club in Austin.
There is a limited number of hotel rooms available for those of you needing to stay overnight.  If you are interested in securing a room at the Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel (just 2 blocks from the Headliners) at a room rate of $169, please e-mail Janey Holstien at the IBAT offices, jholstien@ibat.org.
A formal invitation will be sent to all state-chartered banks and industry partners in the near future.

Benchmarking Financial Literacy--2nd Year
One year ago, Texas bankers collaborated to document the industry’s financial literacy outreach.  Working with the Texas Department of Banking, the IBAT Education Foundation and the Texas Bankers Foundation, banks were asked to participate in an online survey with various questions about their outreach in financial education.
The 2007 survey was sent to 600 bank CEOs and Presidents with locations in Texas and drew 279 responses.  It is our hope that the 2008 survey will draw a larger response, and will reflect a change in how Texas banks prioritize financial education.
Please help us gather this important research in a collaborative manner to create a shared inventory of financial literacy practices in Texas.  Click HERE to enter the survey.  (This survey will take approximately 8 minutes.  It is organized in three easy sections.  Please complete the entire survey.)
Because of the collaborative nature of our three organizations and overlapping contact lists, you may receive duplicate copies of the email request as well as a letter from the Texas Department of Banking.
Some banks may have more than one financial literacy champion.  We welcome every response.  Multiple responses from a single institution will be consolidated to reflect the bank’s activities.  All responses will be collected into one database.  The deadline for completing the survey is August 15.
Many thanks for your assistance as we continue to measure our progress.

Question:   We have been contacted by a Trust company to see if IRA deposits they hold as custodians for their customers would be insured for $100,000 or $250,000 if placed with us.  If they place $250,000 at our bank, styled "Trust Company, Custodian for John Doe, IRA", would this deposit be insured for $100,000 or $250,000?

Following heightened concern about the capital adequacy of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, both the Treasury Department and Fed clearly voiced their support for these government sponsored entities...Long-term Treasury Note prices were off as headline wholesale and retail prices inched higher in June.  Meanwhile, the financial sector breathed a sigh of relief as some banks reported Q2 earnings that beat estimates.  The yield on the 10YrT-Note is up 11bps to 4.07%, while the yield on the 2YrT-Note fell 1bp to 2.58%.  This further steepened the yield curve as the 2's/10's spread widened back out to nearly 150bps.  Read more in this week's Baker Market Update.
